A couple of weeks ago while campaigning in South Carolina, former Vice President Joe Biden stopped at St Anthony Catholic Church to attend Mass. Biden is a lifelong Catholic and it’s quite common for candidates to attend local religious services while on the campaign trail. What makes this visit special is what happened next.
Rev. Robert Morey denied communion to Biden at the service. The reasoning was simple. Biden supports abortion and the Church cannot condone that support by way of sacrament.
The Left is up in arms about this and they are demanding an apology from the priest and from his Bishop. Even dictating to the Church that the Bishop should instruct other priests on how to behave towards politicians. Doesn’t this violate the Left’s sacred separation of Church and State? Except when the Left is dictating terms of course.
It is the job of the Church to teach and to discipline its flock when they have gone astray. Denying of the sacrament of communion is only the first step in this process and it sends a strong message that there is a grievous error in judgement and actions on the part of the one who has been denied.
The wayward Child of God must seek absolution and repent in word and deed to once again enjoy the blessings that are to be had in good standing with the Holy Church.
If, however, he does not repent from his transgressions and even blames the Church for his own failings. Then the Church is obligated to take the matter further.
The Catholic Church used to exercise its authority to bring wayward lords and kings back into line with sound doctrine. And I think they should do so today as well. And the Catholic Church has every right to administer discipline to its members, as any church does, no matter their rank or status.
If Biden, or any other Catholic, of any nationality or political party, goes against the teachings of the Church then they should be disciplined. If the denying of communion doesn’t get the message across then perhaps being excommunicated will get the message loud and clear to them. Of course this would have to be done by their Bishop and I hope at some point one will take this action of discipline.
In the meantime, keep praying for Biden’s repentance and change of heart where he errors in the ways he thinks and acts. While there is still breathe, there is still hope.
