“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” – “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus

“Especially if we can get them to vote Democrat.” – the DNC corollary

Just like a Tyler Perry movie, it seems impossible to get away from the topic of illegal immigration. (Editor’s Note: As Tom was writing this, three more Tyler Perry movies have been shot and will be released in the next 9 hours.) However, a new twist to the discussion came out recently, thanks to Leftists. In an attempt to remove the stigma of people illegally coming into America, Leftists have claimed these people were seeking asylum, which makes the alleged separation of children from parents even worse Naziesque. (Editor’s Note: As Tom was writing this, Leftists make 9,348,178,399,298,804,367,316 Trump/Hitler comparisons.)

Maybe it’s time we educate ourselves (and hopefully Leftists) on what asylum actually means.

asylum

What the Left thinks it means – extending America’s protection to the less fortunate, regardless of circumstances

What it really means – extending America’s protection to the less fortunate with certain conditions

Contrary to popular Leftist belief, asylum is a bit more complicated than just showing up with a suitcase and an expectation to be let in. There are forms that have to be completed (because…government) and a process to be followed (also, because…government). Although this tends to go against my inclination to want a smaller government, this is one area I can understand. Abuse of the asylum option means any Juan, Ricardo, and Jorge can claim it even if the real reason they’re fleeing their home country is because they have overdue library books. Then again, being married to a librarian, that might be a federal offense.

And it’s abuse of the asylum option the Left is advocating right now. By turning every illegal immigrant as an asylum seeker, it waters down the spirit of why we have it in the first place. When someone seeks asylum, it’s because he or she are seeking protection from his or her home country. In other words, we are sticking our necks out for these people and allowing them to come here and be protected. That’s one of the reasons we take the steps we do. If we take in a mass murderer because he or she requests asylum, it makes a mockery of asylum and makes us look worse than David Duke on…well, any day.

As bad as the photos from the detention centers are (which seem to be at least faked more than a Stormy Daniels…”performance”), imagine the damage that could be done to us by making asylum as easy to get as the aforementioned Ms. Daniels. Yet, that’s what Leftists want to do because it suits their needs, politically and financially. And when you add money and power to a situation, the Left will do everything in its power to guarantee a result in their favor.

Case in point, the efforts to malign President Donald Trump for what amounts to inheriting a problem previous Administrations left for him. Trump hasn’t been flawless in his approach, but he has made more strides in two weeks than the Presidents from Reagan to Obama did in years. You can argue about the specifics (and believe me I have), but at least we are moving forward instead of just moving a can down the road.

Asylum should be granted to those who can show they have a legitimate concern with retaliation from their home countries, but those who request it have to do it the right way. It shouldn’t be granted to anyone who wants it. Much like citizenship for those who emigrate here, it has to be earned. Leftists want it to be given like water at a marathon.

But I’m willing to meet the Left halfway on this. They can get their expanded asylum on one condition: they have to take responsibility for those granted asylum on everything from providing basics to ensuring they get American citizenship to guaranteeing their new charges don’t break the law.

So, what do you say, Leftists? Do it…for the children.

To say President Donald Trump’s relationship with the press is hostile is like saying the Hatfields and McCoys had a minor tiff. A particular thorn in Trump’s side is CNN’s Jim Acosta, who is one part Eddie Haskel and one part Sam Donaldson (or at least the way people saw Donaldson during the Reagan Administration).

This hostility came to a head recently during a press conference where White House senior policy advisor Stephen Miller and Acosta over a proposed cut to our immigration policy introduced by Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue. During this exchange, Miller referred to Acosta’s “cosmopolitan bias”, which has made the Left go completely over-the-top cray-cray. (In other words, they way they act on any day ending in a Y.)

Strap in, folks. We’re in for a weird one.

cosmopolitan

What the Left thinks it means – sophisticated and intelligent, people targeted by white supremacists for being sophisticated and intelligent

What it really means – a bunch of people who think their farts don’t stink

If there is one thing the Left excels at, it’s being egotistical. (That, and not being on speaking terms with reality.) They also are great at pretending to be victims, as we can see from Acosta’s actions and statements. To them, being cosmopolitan is not an insult because it speaks well of them. And everyone in their social circles is just like them, thinks like them, speaks like them, and is generally a carbon copy of them.

In other words, they wouldn’t know what to do if they actually had to interact with someone who isn’t one of them. It’s like they’re all Eva Gabor’s character from “Green Acres.”

It’s this kind of thinking Miller was criticizing and Acosta was reflecting. It’s also this kind of thinking that prevents reporters from being as informed and effective as they need to be in today’s media landscape. People rely on reporters to keep them informed on the news of the day, but when the reporters are dumber than a bag of hammers, that trust is violated. Of course, the public trusts the media less than the Weekly World News these days, so maybe they’re coming to realize reporters aren’t that smart.

Exhibit A: Jim Acosta

Acosta’s attempt to take a portion of the inscription on the Statue of Liberty and turn it into immigration law shows he’s ignorant of both. But to hear him describe it (and, believe me, you can’t get him to shut up about it on Twitter), he was defending the rights of those trying to come into this country. Of course, Acosta doesn’t want us to think about the distinction between those trying to come to America through legal channels and those wanting to sneak in because that would ruin the narrative. And in Acosta’s world, if you try to make that distinction as the Trump Administration is trying to do, that’s racist.

I told you he wasn’t that smart.

Adding to this stupidity is the Left’s attempt to paint “cosmopolitan” as secret code for white supremacists because they say Hitler expressed some of the same sentiments about the sophisticated and intelligent. Yeah, and Hitler wore pants. Using that logic, any Leftist who wears pants is literally Hitler. Using real logic, there is a big difference between echoing sentiments and being 100% behind a person’s agenda. And considering Hitler actually leaned more left than right, the Left might want to think carefully about using such flimsy logic to compare people to Hitler.

Now, for the funny part. (And I’m sure some of you readers are saying “Finally!”) Acosta’s outburst was over…a bill. Not a law. Not a platform plank. Not even a sternly-worded memo. A bill. As fans of “Schoolhouse Rock” can attest, that means it’s not a law yet, and…it can be changed.

You know, for people who claim to be cosmopolitan, Acosta and his fellow Leftists are quite unsophisticated when it comes to vital concepts.

To take Miller’s point a bit further, the Left is insulated from the rest of the world, and that’s by choice. Yet, they seem to think they’re so much smarter than the rest of us because…reasons. That’s a bad situation. Picture if you will a scientist whose expertise is in one area of science and decides to comment on a completely different area of science because he or she is considered to be an expert on science by people who don’t understand it. Wait, we already have Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Let’s try another analogy. Let’s say you have a plumber and you need your roof fixed. Unless your plumber also does roofing, you wouldn’t go to him or her for advice. But we’re being told people who rarely leave their urban settings have their fingers on the pulse of the nation outside of their urban settings. Nothing could be further from the truth. That’s the problem with living in an ideological echo chamber: you don’t hear anything outside of it.

The biggest problem with the Left’s reaction to Miller’s comment is it let their mask slide a bit more to show just how much they disdain people outside of their cliques. The media by and large don’t know what life is like between the East and West Coasts, and few are willing to put in the effort to find out. Whether it’s reporters from the Huffington Post or Dan “Fake But Accurate” Rather, Leftists keep being mystified there are people who live between the East and West Coasts and may have a different perspective than they do.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was Miller’s point.

And Acosta and the Left completely missed it.

By calling out Acosta’s cosmopolitan bias, Miller wasn’t trying to blow a Nazi/white supremacist dog whistle. He was making a point about how out of touch the Left is, and given how many column inches have gone into finding more conspiracy theories than Art Bell and Jesse Ventura hooking up with the guys from “Ancient Aliens”, it’s clear they haven’t figured it out. But you do you, kids! You may not think much of me, but that’s fine. At least I can tell the difference between a poem and immigration law.

Leftist Lexicon Word of the Week

In case you missed it, this past Friday was the annual Day Without Immigrants. To supporters of all kinds of immigration, legal or otherwise, it’s a day to remind us how much of the work done everyday is done by immigrants. To the rest of us, it’s usually just another day where little to nothing is different.

Well, this year was different. After some of the people who participated in the Day Without Immigrants failed to show up for work after being warned to be at work, these people found themselves in possession of a fresh new pink slip (and I’m not talking about one from Victoria’s Secret, either). At least they’ll have time to participate in the Days Without a Job marches.

As you might expect, the Left has a vastly different viewpoint on immigration than you or me. Let’s just say that’s not without ideological foundation.

immigration

What the Left believes it means – allowing people from other countries to enter the United States regardless of the way they get here

What it really means – allowing people from other countries to enter the United States as long as it’s done legally

There is a vast difference between the two definitions, and it revolved around legality. Believe it or not, we do have laws concerning immigration into our country. The problem is these laws aren’t enforced as strictly as they could be, mainly due to pressure from the Left. To them, there are no such things as illegal immigrants, just immigrants who come to this country yearning to be free.

Or, in some cases, yearning to live pretty much for free off the largesse of the taxpayers.

That’s where the Left and the rest of us part company. We want anyone who comes into the country to be committed to following the laws on the books. The Left wants anyone who comes into the country to be able to flaunt the law when it suits them and to use the law (and our sympathy) when it suits them.

Take public schools, for example. Illegal immigrants can send their children to school in America to get an education. On the surface, it’s not that big of a deal. When you consider this is being done at the expense of taxpayers, some of whom may have their own children going to those same schools that they would rather have money spent on, the deal becomes a little bigger. And here’s the kicker. These illegal immigrant children are often incapable of speaking English when they enter school. What do the schools do? They hire Spanish-speaking teachers to accommodate the illegal immigrants’ children so they can keep up with their classmates. And guess who gets to pay for that additional manpower.

Spoiler alert: it’s the taxpayers.

It’s not just the public school system where illegal immigrants can get a leg up on the taxpayers. Welfare, federal and state income taxes, and voting are just three areas that come to mind. But the last one, voting, is particularly troublesome except to the Left because they have it all planned out. Say you’re an illegal immigrant trying to stay in the shadows while keeping the benefits the government gives you. When you consider Republicans have no interest letting you flaunt the law, that leaves you with the Democrats, who will not only protect your government goodies, but will let you continue to break the law. All you have to do is vote Democrat.

And people wonder how Nancy Pelosi keeps getting elected.

It’s a persuasive argument combining selfishness, fear, and just a little dishonesty. But it ignores a pretty large contingent of the American population: legal immigrants. You know, the people who want to come here and follow the rules as written? Yeah, they’re not too keen on letting people jump the line in front of them, especially when you consider the hoops legal immigrants have to jump through to get here. The Left doesn’t seem to care too much about these folks, nor what talents they bring to the table. Believe it or not, there are immigration laws on the books that make it more difficult for some people, namely from European countries, to come here. Even if they do manage to win the immigration lottery, these folks have to take tests, swear loyalty to the United States, and go to classes to learn our history and system of laws so they can be productive Americans.

Gee, I wonder why legal immigrants might have a problem with illegal immigrants…

When confronted with their position on illegal immigration, the Left falls back on the notion diversity makes our country stronger. (Except if that diversity doesn’t coincide with their ideology, of course.) To be fair, they have a valid point. Diversity does make our country stronger, but there still needs to be a common thread. Whether you come from Pakistan, Poland, or Puerto Vallarta, you should be free to come to America to experience the freedoms we offer. We welcome your contributions to our melting pot. The only thing we ask is that you follow the rules.

Think of it this way. Let’s say you have a nice house and you’re renting a room. One person goes about the process the right way and fills out an application and submits to a background check. Another person walks in, plops his or her stuff down, and starts eating all your pimento loaf. Granted, you may not like pimento loaf and may be fine with the stranger barging in, but if he or she doesn’t contribute anything to the household income (like, say, rent), you’re going to want that person gone as soon as possible.

Right now, America has a room to rent, and we just want to know who is moving in so we can set the right expectations. Even if we hate pimento loaf, is that too much to ask?
